Easter in Rome

Easter in Rome

Rome is the top Italian destination for Easter week, primarily because of the events led by the Pope in Vatican City and Rome

Holy Week - "Settimana Santa":
Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday, (April 14th), one week before Easter. The Blessing of the Palms, Procession, and Holy Mass for Palm Sunday take place in the morning, usually starting at 9:30, in Saint Peter's Square.

Maundy Thursday:
Holy Thursday marks the beginning of the "Triduum," Latin for "three-day period." It officially begins with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. Usually held in St Peter’s, during the service it is tradition for the Pope to wash the feet of 12 Priests just as Jesus did to the Apostles during the last supper. Hence the name, Maundy, as in 'mandate'.

Good Friday & The Stations of the Cross:
On Good Friday  (April 19th),  a service is held at St Peter’s Basilica at 5pm, and in the evening at 9pm the Stations of the Cross, the Lord's 'Via Crucis' is enacted near the Colosseum; a huge cross with burning torches lights the sky as the stations of the cross are described in several languages.. The event is open to all.

Holy Saturday:
On Holy Saturday the Easter Vigil is held in St Peter’s Basilica. As with all Vatican events, entrance is free.

Easter,  April 21th:
Mass begins at 10:15am in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday. At noon the Pope emparts the Easter message and blessing, called the "Urbi et Orbi," Latin for "To the City and the World," from the Balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
Traditionally an Easter bread called Colomba, (in the shape of a Peace Dove),  is served in homes and restaurants accross the country.

Easter Monday - Pasquetta
Easter Monday is the day Italians plan picnic lunches and outings with family and friends. At Castel St Angelo in the Vatican City, fireworks over the Tiber mark the official end to  Easter celebrations.
